Conscious Matter by jores59:Site of the former Quincy quarries. Not all that many years ago these Quincy quarries were hundreds of feet in depth, full of water. They were drained and filled with landfill supplied from Boston’s big dig tunnel project. What remains are these graffiti covered granite remnants also used by rope climbers (two or three of which you can see at the top of the ledge in the distance).
Aging Dam by jores59:The Tileston & Hollingsworth Dam spanning the Neponset River between the Boston neighborhood of Hyde Park (from where this picture was taken) and Milton, MA. There had been a paper mill at this location as far back as 1773 and along the way a dam was built to power the mill. In the 1960’s this current dam was constructed for the purpose of flood control. Perhaps, but it doesn’t look like it’s in any shape to control much of anything. The last mill, Bay State Paper Company, closed in 2005 and the building has mostly been torn down. Conservation groups have been lobbying to have this dam, as well as the Baker Dam down stream at Lower Mills, demolished.
